DIMETHYL SULFOXIDE (DMSO)

Organic Solvent with various Properties.

DMSO is short for dimethyl sulfoxide, an organic sulfur compound with a wide range of different features. DMSO is a low-viscosity, high-boiling liquid (boiling point 189 °C, 372 °F) and an extremely versatile solvent, which has a characteristic odor and freezes at a temperature of +18 °C (64.4 °F) into the crystalline, solid state.

Therefore, on colder outdoor temperatures DMSO remains in the frozen state - that's why DMSO mostly comes as a frozen substance when shipped during the cold months. By heating the appropriate bottle in a water bath or storing it next to a radiator, DMSO quickly becomes liquid again and can the be used.

Dimethyl sulfoxide or DMSO has long been used as a versatile, polar solvent in organic syntheses as well as a transmitter substance (carrier substance, transport mediator) in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

In the latter, DMSO is used not only in liquid form, but often also as a component of gels. In addition, DMSO prevents the formation of ice crystals in the frozen food (during a freezing process). In recent years, more and more outstanding features of the DMSO have become increasingly known, so that there is now a high density of information on the Internet and numerous books have appeared on the subject.

Natron

Natron or Soda, commonly known under the name sodium bicarbonate (also known as sodium hydrogen carbonate, NaHCO3), is a carbonated salt.

It occurs as a natural mineral called Nahcolith, but can also be obtained from a sodium carbonate solution via reaction with carbon dioxide, CO2. Natron/ Soda comes as a white, crystalline powder, which has been found usage in different fields for a long time.

In our store, you will find Natron powder in robust, practical paper zip bags (reclosable) in sizes of 750g (1.65 lbs) each. We also offer a savings package of 2x750g (2x1.65 lbs).

Regarding the chemical behavior, Natron decomposes to sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), carbon dioxide and water (H2O), if heated above 50 degrees celsius. If brought into contact with acids, sodium bicarbonate decomposes, whereby gaseous CO2 originates. The potential application areas of sodium bicarbonate extend over a wide range, i.a. in the food technology, household, agriculture, in swimming pools, as a pH regulator and to neutralize odors and acids (and acid solutions). Natron has also been used as a water softener and in seawater aquaristics.

A lot more application fields of this compound are described in the literature, which can be found throughout the internet and in several published books.
